| There
are more data and information available than can possibly be developed into standard
publications or tables. Thousands of data items comprise each decennial census. The Census
Bureau produces other regular censuses as well. Two well known ones include the Economic
Census (every five years) and Current Population Survey (each month). There are many
others. There are also many other sources of data at both the national and state level.
The PaSDC can assist clients from sorting through the mounds of data and information
available to developing graphic interpretation of information.
Consultation Services
PaSDC staff can assist clients in determining what data or
information they need, what sources are available, concepts and definitions, limitations
of data, and reliability of data.
Research
Many resources are at the disposal of the PaSDC including
Census Bureau reference publications and documents, federal agency and state agency
reports, Internet web browsing capabilities, and both Penn State University and PA State
Library facilities.
Data/Information Acquisition
Data is available in many media: tape, cartridge, CD/ROM,
Internet sites. Custom programs are developed to pull the data. Data can then be
manipulated and calculations made. Information can be provided to clients in various media
or formats.
Interpretation
Data alone can provide clients with mechanisms to make decisions.
However, further refinement and analysis can be provided. PaSDC staff can analyze data,
produce information reports, and develop graphics and statistical maps to facilitate
interpretation of data and the transformation of data to useful information.
