Value of Pennsylvania's exports continues to increase
MIDDLETOWN, Pa. -- Pennsylvania's role as a major exporter
is continuing.
In 1995, the Commonwealth's total value of exports placed it
eleventh among all states, according to statistics compiled by the
Pennsylvania State Data Center at Penn State Harrisburg.
Between 1994 and 1995, the total value of Commonwealth exports
increased 11.7 percent. "Pennsylvania exports rose from $12.3 billion in
1993, to $13.6 billion in 1994, and then surged to $15.2 billion in 1995,"
says Erik Keptner, research technologist at the Data Center. While the
Commonwealth's exports increased in value, Pennsylvania fell from 10th
to 11th position among the states in total value of exports.
California, with $96.6 billion, Texas with $68.8 billion and New
York with $37.1 billion were the three leading state-exporters in 1995.
The exports of the top three combined constituted 34.2 percent of the
United State's total of $583 billion. Pennsylvania's $15.2 billion was 2.6
percent of the total.
The Commonwealth contributed 10.4 percent of all U.S. export
values in stone, clay, glass, and concrete, 6.1 percent in primary metal
industries, and 5.7 percent in printing, publishing, and allied industries.
In 1995, industrial and commercial machinery and computer
equipment made up the largest percentage of the Keystone State's exports
at 18.8 percent. This industrial category has been the number one
Pennsylvania export of the 1990s.
Other top Pennsylvania exports included electronic and electrical
equipment and components (14.7 percent), chemicals and allied products
(11.7), transportation equipment (9.6), and primary metal industries (8.6).
For 1995, Canada remained the top importer of Pennsylvania and
U.S. exports -- a continuing trend of the 1990s. Exports to Canada made
up 33.9 percent -- $5.2 billion -- of total Pennsylvania exports and 21.6
percent -- $126 billion -- of the U.S. total.
Exports to Mexico, $697.9 million, decreased 18.3 percent from
1994, causing that country to fall from second to fourth largest importer
of Pennsylvania products. Japan, at $977.7 million, and the United
Kingdom, at $935.5 million, took second and third positions, respectively.
State-specific export figures are released by the U.S. Census
Bureau's Foreign Trade Division and are refined by the Massachusetts
Institute for Social and Economic Research.
The state-sponsored Pennsylvania State Data Center is the
Commonwealth's official source of population and economic statistics and
services. It is based at Penn State Harrisburg's Institute of State and
Regional Affairs in its School of Public Affairs.
