This is a brief glossary of some terms used in our labor force data pages.
Civilian Labor Force Estimates
Civilian Labor Force: Estimated number of persons 16 years of age and over, employed or unemployed during week including 12th of month, distributed by place of residence.
Total Employed: Includes nonagricultural wage and salary workers, the self-employed, unpaid family workers, domestics, agricultural workers, and persons involved in labor disputes. Employment distributed by place of residence.
Total Unemployed: Estimated number of persons, by place of residence, who did not work during reference week and were looking for work, whether or not eligible for unemployment compensation. Includes those who did not work and were waiting to be called back to an old job or report to a new job.
Unemployment Compensation
Initial Claims: Notices of unemployment filed to request a determination of entitlement to compensation in a new benefit year (period of eligibility) following a period of unemployment or to begin a second or subsequent period of eligibility within the benefit year following interim employment within the benefit year.
